Director Statement
The inspiration for this film comes from the deeply personal experiences of my great-grandmother, who lived with dementia for the last 15 years of her life. Witnessing her journey growing up, I observed not only the challenges she endured but also the profound grief and resilience within my family.
Through this film, my goal was to create a narrative that resonates with audiences on an emotional level, offering a shared space of understanding and connection. By addressing such a universal yet deeply personal topic, I hope Mariposa provides solace to those who have been touched by dementia, fostering a sense of empathy and healing.
As a team, we are going for a visual style that references the golden age of Disney animation. We wanted the film to feel like it was set in the classic 1940’s home with a touch of whimsy. The hybrid environment is set to emphasize the dream like reality of Mariposa’s world, and to accompany the unnatural butterflies which invade it.
