A Franco-Russian Filmmaker Bridging Two Worlds

Svetlana Trébulle is a Franco-Russian filmmaker who grew up immersed in tales and legends. These stories have profoundly shaped her imagination and given her a taste for poetic and mysterious universes, where the fantastical and the real intertwine, where dream and reality blur together.
Her work reflects this dual cultural heritage, weaving together the rich storytelling traditions of Russian folklore with a contemporary European sensibility. Through her lens, ancient myths find new life in modern settings, creating a unique cinematic language that speaks to audiences across cultures.

La Louve: A Haunting Tale of Obsession

Trébulle’s short film La louve tells the story of Victor, a solitary 25-year-old Parisian haunted by a fairy tale his grandmother used to read to him as a child. The tale of the She-Wolf has become an obsession that has marked his entire life.

When Victor learns that several people in Russia have been killed in wolf attacks, a disturbing detail catches his attention: witnesses claim to have seen a young woman with the animal in the forest where the tragedy occurred. This mysterious connection between the real-world attacks and his childhood tale draws Victor deeper into a dangerous fascination.

The film explores the thin boundary between myth and reality, between innocent fascination and destructive obsession. How far can childhood stories influence our adult lives? When does fascination become dangerous? Trébulle crafts a Franco-Russian fiction that delves into these questions with subtlety and atmospheric tension.

A Film That Embodies the Festival’s Vision

The She-Wolf perfectly embodies the essence of the Festival du Film Merveilleux & Imaginaire: it celebrates the power of storytelling, the universality of fairy tales, and their ability to transcend borders and generations. The film demonstrates how legends can shape our identities and continue to haunt us long after childhood has ended.

Through Victor’s journey, Trébulle invites us to reflect on the stories that have shaped us and the mysterious hold they can have on our lives. Her poetic and enigmatic approach creates a viewing experience that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll.
